Cytapheresis is a treatment method that improves intestinal inflammation in patients with inflammatory bowel disease by removing these activated leukocytes from the blood. It is a  safe treatment method with fewer side effects than other drug therapies involving steroids and immunosuppressants;  recently, it was speculated that cytapheresis might have  a previously unknown effect in improving the diminished effect of biologics such as infliximab.
