According to data from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the incidence of deaths caused by abuse is highest in infants in the first year of life. Insufficient development of parent-child bonding may be an important factor that contributes to this problem. Children admitted to NICU and their families are often at the high risk of abuse. Family-centered care (FCC) has been proposed as one of the strategies for addressing this issue. Utilizing the concept of FCC, our hospital made collaborative efforts in carrying out and encouraging such activities as exchanging journals with the families, patient participatory nursing care, visitation by siblings, and utilization of child care time. Our activities yielded the following outcomes. (1) Through exchanging journals with parents, we came to know their inner feelings and emotions  towards their children. (2) The patient participatory nursing care plan enhanced parents' understanding of their children's medical conditions. (3) Sibling visitation allowed the siblings to express that they were looking forward to once again living with their brothers/sisters who are currently staying in the hospital. (4) Utilization of child care time allowed the parents to understand the daily rhythm of their children and reduced their doubts and worries concerning child rearing, which consequently helped them acquire self-confidence.
