内容記述 | This is the second effort in translating old Chinese poems. The poems that we have translated into English in the first section partly tells us what miserable lives the people under the rule of Emperor Wu in the Han Dynasty were forced to lead. Fathers, sons and hushands were being driven to war like cattle. Our reading of the poems is mainly based on Shiji (Historical Memoirs) by Sima Qian (145-?86 B.C.), the greatest historian in Han Dynasty. He angered the Emperor for defending a disgraced general and was condemned to death, but later the punishment was mitigated to castration. His vivid description of the Emperor's inhuman cruelty must also have angered the Emperor. The work was partly altered and rewritten by his followers. We assume that our reading of the poems in the first section partly reveals what was veiled by the alteration and rewriting. The poems in the second section, written by the Emperor himself tell us that the cruelest Emperor had a deeply human love only for Li, one of his wives even after her death. |
