Fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectra of 14 penicillins have been presented and their fragmentation pathways have been analyzed in both positive and negative modes. In the positive mode, quasi-molecular peaks were detected at m/z M+H and m/z M+X (X=K or Na) for most compounds; small adduct peaks were observed at m/z M+2X-H. Peaks due to cleavage of the side chain structures (R) in α-position to the carbonyl group were also observed in some penicillins. Cations at m/z 160, 204 and 236 were observed in common for penicillins with free acid, Na and K, respectively, which can be used for screening of penicillins. Other positive ions, resulting from cleavage of both lactam and thiazolidine rings, were also observed. In the negative mode, quasi-molecular peaks at m/z M-H and m/z M-X were observed in most compounds; anions at m/z M-COOX and m/z R+ 101 also appeared. |
