内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Tao Yuan-ming, who was favored by the governor of the Province where he lived his official life, was invited to a farewell party given in honor of one of the governer's friends. Tao made a poem for the occasion (Farewell on an Autumn Evening). The farewell poem made by a lonely, old poet who had lost his wife, deeply moved those present at the party. The happy occasions which he had shared with his wife remained in his retrospective poem (Spring Longings). It seemed that he enjoyed the freedom of his hermit-like life, released from all the restrictions that his offical life had imposed upon him. In fact, he basically lived a rather nihilistic existence, feeling that 'Human life is but an illusion, /It all ends in nothingness' (Back to the Rural Life, No.4). We have consistently viewed the poet's life as one in which he was treated as an outcast and, in his attempt to struggle against the oppression alone, was exhausted and retired to his solitude. Arrogance, condescension, and deception are all aspects of human nature which have existed throughout history. Therefore, we compare his situation with modern social situations in an attempt to translate his poems into English. We believe that his poems mirror some of the struggles which people are experiencing in modern societies. Sakurai expresses his personal views on social discriminnation in the 4th chapter of the present paper.
