When an old man faces the unexpected death of his wife, whom he has entirely depended on throughout his life, he is at a loss as to what to do. This is a familiar situation and increasingly a problem in present-day Japan. An old poet, Tao Yuan-ming, who was an outcast, and who drank alcohol in order to escape from reality, at last, realized the importance of his wife's love, thoughtfulness and encouragement to him. He came to be despised even by his less sophisticated neighbors. His problem with alcohol is truly heartbreaking to see at the end of the life of this great poet, whose poetry is analyzed in this paper. English translations are also presented and discussed. |
